Affair
I parked across the street and put the car in park. I had the radio low and gulped a beer, hoping a cop wouldn’t catch me in the act. Fortunately, no cars were in sight.
Deep down I knew something was amiss, so when I found the texts on her phone, I wasn’t surprised. But my best buddy, that’s unforgivable on both sides.
Her car just pulled in. When she reached the porch, he came outside and smiled. They embraced, lips locked together, hands in each other’s hair, before shutting the door.
I knew then what I had to do.

Dancing Hands
She talked with her hands. It was comical.
The more animated she became, the more her hands flapped and fluttered through the air.
We teased her, had her sit on her hands, which practically made her mute.
She’d laugh then and poke our ribs, call us stinkers, and her hands danced as she did.
I didn't make it back in time. I would have if I didn't stop.
The bill wasn’t even due.
I was stalling, but stalling what?
My return to her bedside? Her last breath, or both?
When I got there, her hands were at her sides, spent.

The Search For Meaning
The purpose of the meeting wasn't revealed beforehand.
Timothy walked into the boardroom carrying notebook and coffee, ready for anything. He dutifully took notes as the minutes were recited, then listened as each department head read their reports covering the previous 24 hours.
An argument broke out over the order of the reports. The company would not refer to it as an argument, but rather a protocol discussion. The minutes wouldn't make note of the raised voices on both sides.
Eventually, the meeting broke up. Everyone returned to their cubicles.
Timothy still had no idea why the meeting was convened.
In A Momentary Trance
Her gentle swaying at the intersection made him stop abruptly on the sidewalk. She wore large headphones that were cocked forward on her head. Her eyes were closed and her head moved from side to side as if caught in an otherworldly trance. Her hands tapped out a sporadic beat against her sides.
Her lips began to move slowly at first then increased in speed. He watched her with a growing anticipation that left him glued in place. Suddenly, her mouth opened wide and she vehemently sang out lyrics to a song he never heard before, but wished he had.
