Held Up
“Don’t take the ‘Express Lane’,” Paul warned. “Last time chickens slowed us down.”
Tim frowned. “Darn slowpokes! Afraid to drive fast, should stay out.”
“Na, I’m talking real chickens,” Paul continued. “Engine trouble. Took a while to get going.”
“What?”
“We was lucky. Truck behind had new barbecues. Behind him, delivery van with bbq sauce.”
Tim listened, keenly interested.
“Get this, they set up on the roadside. Best supper ever.”
“You lucky no cops showed up.”
“Two did. Said ‘twas illegal what we’s doin’.”
“You’s arrested?”
“Nope. After two rounds of chicken, they thanked us. Took off on their bikes.”

The Journey
She crawls up the streambank to the edge of the road to carry out her innate mission. Now in the twelfth year of her life, she’s made the trip six times before, but the litter gets worse every year. On her way to the roadside, she moves past another snapping turtle hopelessly tangled in clear fishing line. Discarded beer cans and bottles keep getting in her way. She claws away sand and starts laying eggs. Fifty white eggs are guided into the hole and covered, only to be abandoned; in ninety days, the turtle hatchlings will be on their own.

Tire Chains
"I'm packing tire chains in the boys' luggage. Just wrap them around the tires," the father of my two nephews advised.
"Sounds easy." I reply. "We'll have fun in the snow!"
Three days later, my nephews and I are standing by the snow-laden roadside with tire chains wrapped around the axle.
We look forlorn and lost. A park ranger passes by, a CHP passes by, and a dozen travelers glance at a young woman and two children in distress.
"Lady? Need some help?" says a tatooed Hell's Angel over the roar of his Harley.
"Please! You are an angel. Thanks."
