Rain

The rain pelted my windshield, and the wipers provided minimal vision. My heart pounded and my hands gripped the steering wheel. I drove at a slow pace and prayed the weather would calm down and hoped the next exit would be soon.

“Lilly, remember how terrible the weather was on our first date. We watched the raindrops from the restaurant window, and you commented on how nature can get angry at any time. That’s when I kissed you for the first time. Your raspberry lip balm tasted so sweet.”

I glanced at the empty seat wishing she were still alive.

Another Broken Heart

They'd warned her. They told Sheila that he wasn't boyfriend material, let along worthy of marriage. But she hadn't listened. Sheila believed that if she stuck with him, Greg would prove them all wrong. He had hidden layers.

Then Greg decided it was over, and here she was in tears. The same thing had happened again. Her girlfriends didn't need to say, "I told you so." Her therapist didn't need to remind her of repetitive behavior patterns.

Paid In Full

“Damn you. I hope they will make you pay for this.”

She stood up and walked out on me.

On our first date.

I had carefully checked the reviews and when I made the reservation I insisted on having the best table.

All dressed up, shaved and slightly perfumed I picked her up in my car.

“A surprise!”, I said when she asked me where we were going to.

Looking at today’s special of the Grill House, she could not stop gagging.

I truly didn’t know she was a vegetarian.

And of course, they made me pay for this. From Guest Contributor Hervé Suys

Speak Now

Matt got the news in time to break up the wedding. Did people actually do that, he wondered, or did that only happen in the movies? Speak now or forever hold your peace. Matt couldn’t remember ever having heard that line spoken at any of the many weddings he’d been to.

Against his heart’s desires, Matt decided to sit the wedding out. Who was he to stand in the way of Carla’s happiness? Instead of attending, he returned to the site of their first date and sat quietly as a piece of the world moved on with his silent assent.

The Never-Ending Date

Barbara and Steve began their first date in the firehouse deli. They both thought it quaint. It didn't take long for them to realize things were going extremely well. After their movie, as he walked Barbara back to her house, Steve suggested they continue the date tomorrow.

"I'll meet you in the morning and it will be part of the same date." Barbara found the idea charming.

When Steve proposed three years later, Barbara asked if that would mean the end of their first date. Steve said no.

"Why would I stop the best thing that's ever happened to me."
