Next For Mel

“Choose.”

“What?” Mel was confused. It was 3 AM. Just moments before, he'd been pleasantly dreaming.

“You don't know what ‘choose’ means?”

“Huh?”

“CHOOSE, MEL!”

The irritated voice seemed to come from every direction, as though from out of a whirlwind.

“AND MAKE IT SOMETHING INANIMATE.”

This was it.

“TIME'S UP.”

Mel's life – if it could be called that – was over.

The angel had others to visit that Thursday and more important places to go.

“Couldn't I be a dog, or a goldfish?”

“REINCARNATION'S MAINLY INTO LIFELESS OBJECTS, MEL.”

People don't realize.

“Like...into an old basketball?”

“SO BE IT!”

Just A Game

Paul steps to the line and takes a deep breath. Were he to sink the next two shots, he will be celebrated globally for the rest of his life. Women will worship him. Children will be named after him. Movies will be made and he'll be the star. His legacy will be forever secure.

If he misses, however, not only will his own life be ruined, but those of an entire city.

The shots miss badly. Death, when it finally comes, will be a mercy for Paul.

And to think there was a time when basketball was just a game.

Winning Isn't Everything

Eddie looked at the shot clock. Ten seconds remained, trailing by one.

He would take the last shot himself. No one else could be trusted. His teammates had already come close to ruining everything.

With five seconds left, he crossed over to his left hand, and drove into the lane. Three players collapsed on him. From the corner of his eye, he saw Ryan wide open.

Instead of passing, he forced the shot. It bounced violently off the rim. They lost the championship.

Eddie hid a smile. They may have lost the game, but he had just won 50,000 dollars.
