Wasted Youth

"Youth is wasted on the young."

"Agreed. All young people want to do is have fun, go on adventures, play sports, work out, join social clubs, have sex, see the world, fall in love, attack the status quo, learn new skills, create art, make friends, get high, topple the oligarchy, save the world from self-destruction, dance the night away, see how fast they can go, push boundaries, eat at all the cool places, risk life and limb, and trip the light fantastic.

"That sounds nice, but the reality is mostly posting to social media and binge watching Friends."

"Point taken."

Happy

When I was twenty, I had a friend who worked as a bartender. I remember that he hated sports, but that he learned to talk sports in order to get through his nights behind the bar with some civility, and of course to earn tips. And that is how I get through my life, by acting like I give a shit about things that I could care less about, by going through the motions. It generally works pretty well for me. People think that I'm a nice guy. Some have even gone so far as to think that I'm happy.

He would take the last shot himself. No one else could be trusted. His teammates had already come close to ruining everything.

With five seconds left, he crossed over to his left hand, and drove into the lane. Three players collapsed on him. From the corner of his eye, he saw Ryan wide open.

Instead of passing, he forced the shot. It bounced violently off the rim. They lost the championship.

Eddie hid a smile. They may have lost the game, but he had just won 50,000 dollars.
