Curious Cath

She needed to know so badly, but was afraid to ask. Imagine he didn't know either or – worse – had forgotten.

No, she wouldn't bother the renowned academic (and her life partner) with it. It would only distract him from his life's work: the analysis of 100-word stories.

For days on end he researched various pieces, decomposing the sentences and studying the words.

A few times he attempted himself, but he never got further than 96.

His admiration for the 100-word virtuosos was endless.

However, her curiosity got the upper hand.

"Honey, I've waited a long time to ask you, but…"

Drought’s End

It was almost dark and he pulled into his driveway a happy man.

He had planned to be home in time for lunch, or at least to be at home at lunchtime, home in time for his favorite talking heads to read him the news he’d missed in the morning while he showered so as to make himself presentable at his favorite café, his best black journal open, crying out for him not to allow yet another eight-day lapse without so much as a single penstroke.

It was almost dark and he was happy to have generated three whole sentences.

What Happened To Ben?

“So, uh, what happened to Ben?”

“Twitter. Once he discovered that, well, he just sort of fell into a black hole.”

“Do you talk to him on Twitter?”

“Oh yeah. All the time.”

“That’s funny. I can’t get him to return my calls. I even went to his house one day and he didn’t answer the door.”

“Just tweet him. He’ll respond.”

“That seems weird. Does he make sense? Talk in complete sentences?”

“He’s hilarious. Same old Ben.”

“Only he’s not really there. He’s just a digital ghost.”

“When you put it that way it just sounds sad.”

“I know.”
