Time Traveler's Tale

The ending of the closed time curved loop was about to happen? How would one know? Stories, deja vu? A feeling that something new was about to happen? New? In a cycle of recycled? Nothing was new under the sun. All scenarios had been done. And this too was just some sort of redo.

The question the time traveler had? Was any of this real? Meaning? The time traveler had seen more than 50 states of the US. Had seen UK leave the EU. Had watched Hawaii being nuked. All seemed surreal. The question of time. The question traveling time.

The Thermonuclear War Is On

The wind is blowing. The strong wind means something from memories. Memories? 1978 Christmas.. Jimmy Carter used nukes against Russia. How do I know? Same reason why I know Douglas MacArthur in Korea had to be changed out so many times, making him look crazy. Because? The soul swapping allows that dead reality to live more. Same with JFK did the governor of Texas wear a cowboy hat? Or did someone else kill him? Thermonuclear war is not winnable. Alternative realities are dying right and left just 90 degrees from your sight is not funny. Laugh but Hawaii was nuked.

Mother’s Tears

In 1991 my parents invited Sharon and I on a cruise to Hawaii and Tahiti (where we had never been). This was during the run up to Desert Storm, the US invasion of Kuwait to liberate it from Iraq. The trip was quite enjoyable, but what sticks in my mind was the sight of my mother crying on the deck when we received news of the invasion. It saddened her to think of her three brothers going to war in the WWII Pacific and Korea. Flying back to the mainland USA I imagined that the plane was filled with terrorists.

Career

A holiday in Hawaii proved to be a great way to celebrate my ten years’ service with the company. In my absence, a new department head was appointed. The morning of my return, the boss walked in and introduced himself.

“Xavier Truex, your new department head. If you would like to resign now, I will give you a glowing reference. Sooner is better than later.”

“Why would I resign? I mean, I’ve just celebrated ten years' highly rated service with the company.”

“My girlfriend is looking to change jobs. She has experience in this area.”

I feel the screws tightening.

My Last Hawaiian Vacation

My new swim trunks were still crispy and smelled of a fresh paint. I plunged into the warm Hawaiian water, ready for my long-postponed vacation. And then I saw Her.

She gave me a hearty, genuinely happy smile, exposing a string of perfect, pearly white teeth. Her tight black skin glittered under the sun. She was clearly into me.

I looked back at my family uncomfortably. Little Johnny was pointing his little finger in my direction: too late. My body split in half, the ocean stained scarlet.

Luckily, my swim trunks remained completely intact: Sharky did not like their taste.
