Just Another Day

Shots are fired and I take cover behind a bunch of boxes. I won’t last much longer without back up. The gun shots intensify and I hit the one guy in the shoulder. He drops to floor and winces.

Finally, I hear the sirens. The squad comes charging in, ready as gunfire surrounds them.

My ears ring and my knees buckle from crouching.

The shooting continues, and I’m tired and can’t hunker much longer. Finally, it quiets and someone approaches. It’s the captain. He gently places a hand on my shoulder.

“It’s over now.”

Just another day on the force.

Peaches

I open the window with force to see what the commotion is. The street is filled with people standing and screaming. I see a glimpse of a shoeless foot, sock hanging. Long red hair catches my eyes, as does the smashed front windshield of a small car.

An ambulance approaches blaring its siren and the crowd shifts to the sidewalk.

Now I see the victim is my next-door neighbor and my heart palpitates.

Sitting on my lap is her kitten Peaches, who I pet sit.

I coddle the furry cat in my arms, and realize I’ll be his home now.

Victory

The force of the sword against my shield knocked me to the ground. As the sword came toward me, I turned and pushed myself up. I could barely see through my protective head shield and the sweat dripped down my face. The man, large and fierce, came at me again, and the clanking of our swords filled the arena.

One of us would die, slaves no one cared about.

In one last attempt, I lunged, stuck my sword into his side and twisted. He moaned, collapsing to the ground face down. The crowd cheered.

I raised my hands in victory.
