Shadows Of The Forgotten Timepiece
He never uttered the word curse, but Dante had no doubt his life was marked for tragedy.
From his car accident at 16, to the string of outlandish catastrophes that followed him like ducklings throughout adulthood, including bouts of homelessness, addiction, and illness, both mental and physical in nature, Dante never caught a break, until finally he simply gave up all together.
Most of those who knew poor Dante blamed his lack of willpower. But they might have thought differently had they realized every misfortune occurred at exactly 3:13 PM. The same time he'd broken his grandfather's lucky watch.
Forever And Ever
“Love from my heart to yours, always,” Christopher’s mother cooed, cradling his young body.
During adolescence their relationship strengthened. Whenever he lost direction, she made time for him.
Into adulthood, the pattern continued. He didn’t hesitate in seeking her wisdom.
As Christopher strolled on the beach near the home they once shared, something at a distance caught his eye. A polished heart-shaped pebble glistened under the streaming sunshine.
He looked to the deep blueness above, thanking his mother for the gift. Feeling her warmth, after she had left life on earth.
Hearts continued to surface the rest of his life.

Personal History
Adulthood in Texas means being old enough to get the electric chair if you kill someone. In 17th century England offenders sent to the pillory were pelted by the crowd with dung, dead cats and dogs, rotten vegetables, and, in extreme cases, stones and even saucepans. Some, though, flung flowers in Defoe’s face. It’s the difference between weather and climate. The least you can do is pretend to care. In Jewish tradition a righteous man is buried with 144 prayer books atop his coffin. When my Uncle Lou was buried, they put the books in cardboard boxes labeled Kitchen Utensils.

Wishes
I saw a comet yesterday. It came as though from nowhere, soaring across the deep blue expanse of sky inset with bright stars. Watching it, I felt youthful again, glowing with vibrant dreams and astronomical aspirations—reborn like a phoenix from the ashes of adulthood.
In a moment of euphoria, I closed my eyes and wished for the love of my life. The fiery tail ripped through the night, searching for my soulmate. When I opened my eyes, my wife was standing before me.
Then I remembered—comets are hard, icy rocks, and they suck the life from the sun.
